An excerpt from our devotional guide: These Days published by Presbyterian Publishing Corporation: July 13th Public Prayer, Luke 11:1 He was praying in a certain place and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." When you are called to pray in a group, what do you do? I wonder what Jesus had in mind when he taught his disciples to pray. Reciting prayers will always be an important part of our worship life, but we also have to be aware that prayer can happen around us at any time. A rainbow captured in a photgraph is a prayer of adoration. A volunteer giving her time at a shelter is offering a prayer of intercession. Our challenge, then, is to sometimes stop reciting prayers and to begin to allow prayer. When we greet a loved one, when we look at the wonders and sometimes the horror of nature, when we reach out to someone in need we are also praying. And God is listening. God, allow my actions and words to be prayers of praise and adoration for all that you have done. Amen. by Mary Jorgenson, Shawnee, Kansas
